Raising funds: hold a cake bake & sale, put on a book sale in your office, set-up a sponsored slim/read/run/swim etc and donate funds raised to your trade welfare charity, helping colleagues in need.

London Marathon: we have a minimum of five guaranteed places each year in the VirginMoneyGiving London Marathon. For just a £10 (plus VAT) registration fee and a promise to raise a minimum of £1500 in sponsorship, we can offer (subject to availability) a chance to fulfil one of your life’s ambitions. Just contact claire@btbs.org for further details. We also welcome support from runners who manage to obtain places in any marathon, half-marathon, 10- or 5 km races.

Donations: we give over £100,000 each year through our Grants Programme. We have not yet achieved our objective of establishing an Endowment Fund to guarantee funds to cover this commitment, so we are still dependent on donations from corporates within the trade, individuals and grant-making trusts. We receive regular donations from £5 a year to £10,000 (you will appreciate there are not many at the top end!) but this still only provides £65,000 each year. We can spend double that on grants in a normal year, and sometimes there is even higher demand. Please help us to be in a position to never say no to an eligible, deserving application; all donations, regular or even one-off, are gratefully received.

Gift Aid Form

This is a printable Word document template that allows donors to request that their donation is gift-aided to the charity, adding a significant percentage (currently 25%) from tax already paid – so at no extra cost.  In fact, higher-rate tax payers can benefit by declaring gift aid donations on their tax return, and reducing their tax bill by 25% of the value of the donation, (or more for those paying income tax at 45%).

Booksales: sales of donated books also raise £65,000 each year.  We hold a small number of sales each year at our community centre at The Retreat; we are dependent on the input of volunteers (often Retreat residents) as well as the generosity of the trade – and the general public with an eye for a bargain!

  • (Trade): Providing books for our sale: returns, overstocks, file copies, even clearing your office shelves!  We can collect from London (or near Kings Langley) by arrangement – or deliveries are always welcome; some publishers provide a regular pallet or two each month…
  • (Public): Coming along to our booksales – several times a year we hold our famous booksales;

We hope that many people, particularly those in the trade, will want to make a personal statement of their support, whether in the form of an annual donation or in terms of skills, time or resources; all such support will be extremely beneficial to the charity’s aims.
