Our Grants

Welfare grants

We offer grants for book trade people and their families when they are facing a crisis. Sometimes this is a change of circumstance such as an unexpected bill; unemployment; redundancy; a health concern; a caring responsibility; accidents, illness or bereavement or housing insecurity.

If you, or someone you know in the trade, is struggling please call Glenda on 01923 263128 or email her on glenda@btbs.org

Entry to the trade grants

If you are trying to secure your first job in the book trade we may be able to help you by funding career development sessions and helping with the cost of travel to interviews. If you receive a job offer and need to relocate, we may be able to provide a grant to help with the living costs for your new role. We are passionate about supporting young entrants from all backgrounds and recognise the additional barriers faced by underrepresented groups.

FAQs

How much can I apply for?

We fund according to need, but obviously we have an overall budget within which we have to work; we aim to help as many people as possible so this should not stop anyone applying!

How long does the process take?

We are as quick as we can be with approval, once you’ve provided us with the correct paperwork it takes a few days. Once you’ve been approved and we have your bank details we can transfer the money fast. We always try to be as fast as we can where there are circumstances that require it.

How can I make a compliment, comment or complaint?

We have a comments, compliments and complaints policy which is available to help us resolve any issues and to celebrate when things go well. You can read this here

We also have a form to complete to get the ball rolling, which is available here.

Do I need to provide proof of income and expenditure?

Yes please as this is important in order to assess every application fairly and consistently. We also ask for receipts for any large purchases that we pay for and these can be scanned or sent as a photo for our records.

How do you assess applications?

We use the Joseph Rowntree methodology to ensure a consistent approach when assessing applications.

Who funds The Book Trade Charity?

Our funding comes from donations from companies, individuals and grant-making trusts within the industry, events put on by supporters, or from involvement with national events, such as the London Marathon, with a small amount income from investments; our housing provision is effectively self-funding.
